SHOULDER DISLOCATION

Shoulder joint is one of the most complex joints of body, it is a ball and socket type of joint. The shoulder joint is the most commonly dislocated joints of the body.

What is Dislocation of shoulder joint:-

The dislocation of the shoulder is an injury in which the upper arm bone comes out of the  socket it is present in. The shoulder joint is the most mobile joints of the body, because of which it can be easily dislocated. Fractures, nerve damages, muscle tear are some of the most common complications of shoulder dislocation. Shoulder joint injury usually takes few weeks to recover.

Sign and symptoms :-

When the shoulder bone (humerus) forcibly pulled out of the socket, cartilage, muscle, and other tissues are stressed and torn which leads to dislocation of shoulder, sign and symptoms are:-
  • A visible deformed shoulder in which the ball comes out of socket • unusual shape of shoulder joint.
  • Swelling or Bruising.
  • Excessive pain - Particularly after some time of injury.
  • Painful movements or restricted movements of shoulder joint.
  • An audible 'crack' sound in shoulder joint area.
Shoulder dislocation may cause numbness, weakness, such as in neck or the arm. Muscles of the shoulder becomes spastic  which often increase the intensity of pain.

As shoulder is most frequently dislocated joint of body it should be properly taken care of, because it moves in several directions. Extreme rotation of the shoulder joint can pop the ball out of the socket. Partial dislocation in which the upper arm bone is partially out of the socket - also may occur.

Dislocated shoulder can be caused by:-
  • Sports injury - shoulder dislocation is common injury in sports that contains physical contact such as football, hockey or the sports that may involve fall such as gymnastics, volleyball.
  • Trauma or Accidents - any type of trauma accident which hits the shoulder joint can be a common cause like road traffic accident, fall of any heavy object on shoulder.
  • Falls - shoulder maybe dislocated during fall, such as falling from high place.
Prevention of shoulder Dislocation:-
  • Maintaing proper Posture/form during any activity - not maintain in the posture while certain type of physical activities causes dislocation or increased rate of fractures, muscle tears and tendon injuries.
  • Take care of yourself to avoid falls - Falls are most common cause of shoulder dislocation. Taking care of self and using proper equipment helps to prevent dislocations.
  • Exercise regularly - Exercising helps to maintain strength and flexibility of joints and muscles, due to which chances of dislocation is reduced by 50%.
  • Wear proper equipments while playing a sport - sports injury maybe a severe cause and complication of dislocation, always wear proper gears while playing sports to prevent any type of Injury.
More than 25% of dislocations are at increased risk of leading Fractures. Always take preventive measures to avoid such type of injuries.
