Shoulder Bursitis causes and prevention.

Shoulder bursae is a tiny fluid filled sac inside shoulders. Bursae helps to reduce the friction between the bones in the joints. If the bursae of the shoulder becomes inflamated this lead to a condition called as shoulder bursitis.

Causes of shoulder bursitis can include injury, overuse or the medical conditions that causes joint inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis. Shoulder bursitis can be Sub Acromial bursitis and/or Sub Deltoid bursitis. 

How shoulder bursitis feel like?

Shoulder bursae act as cushion for tendon in rotator cuff that connects bone to bone. If there is a case of shoulder bursitis, certain movements of the shoulder and tendon can cause extreme pain and discomfort.

Some of Most common symptoms of shoulder bursitis are:-

  • Swelling and redness.
  • Lacalized aching or tenderness in affected shoulder.
  • Stiffness.
  • Pain while side lying (lying on the shoulder).
  • Pain on top of shoulder joint.
  • Extreme pain while lifting the arm upwards.
  • Pain while Pushing any object.
When to see a doctor?
  • Disabling joint pain.
  • Inability to move joint.
  • Excessive swelling, redness, bruising or a rash.
  • Sharp shooting pain, especially during exercise.
  • Fever.
Major causes of shoulder bursitis:-
  • Trauma - Major causes of bursitis are repetitive movements or certain positions that cause excessive opposite forces on the shoulder. Certain traumatic accidents can cause shoulder bursitis.
  • Infections - Bursitis is more likely to be caused by infections, that can be due to infection in skin or membrane that covers the bursae.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis - certain diseases such as gout, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis can develop bursitis from the crystal deposits. When this crystal form in bursae, this cause Inflammation leading to bursitis.
Prevention :-

The risk of shoulder bursitis can be reduced and prevented in certain ways:-
  • Lifting properly - while doing any exercise such as weight lifting or lifting anything heavy, take care of the posture and the way of lifting, as lifting heavy and Overusing same joint can cause trauma leading to bursitis.
  • Using proper cushion or padding for joints.
  • Taking breaks while performing repetitive tasks or giving a break to joints.
  • Stop activities that causes pain.
Shoulder bursitis is an internal tissue damage so maintaining it properly and taking proper precautions while activities or activities of daily life can help in preventing bursitis.
